The brightness of the colors in the photo depends upon the quality of the photo. I had really good light when I took that picture, and those flowers tend to be bright bold colors anyway.
As far as the calendar, look in your dashboard under widgets. Find the calendar widget, drag it to your widget area, click “save” and it should appear on your blog.
