Sandscapes: Beach, bird, boat

Beach, kayak, bird

Beach, bird, boat.

I tried to catch as much as I could in this photo: the beach, Lake Michigan, a kayaker we met on a journey from Lake Michigan to Detroit, a gull flying overhead, and Holland Light House, about eight miles in the distance. How did I do?

  1. Excellent! Your Lake Michigan beach reminds me of our Chesapeake Bay beaches. I am finally going to get to see Lake Michigan in September because I’m going to Chicago for the first time. I’m so excited!

    • Yes, I do, and find it mind-boggling. The kayaker we met (in the far right of the photo) as kayaking from Chicago to Detroit. Before industrialization, travelers and traders traveled the Great Lakes in boats as small as a kayak, but we don’t really think about people doing that today. How alone they must have felt in their little canoes on a lake as vast as an ocean, and just as dangerous? There are 25 shipwrecks just in the Straits of Mackinac and hundreds in the Great Lakes overall. And many of these are major vessels – i.e. the ore carrier The Edmund Fitzgerald.

Don't leave yet. Tell me what's on your mind.
