I’m gonna wash that man right out of my hair

Long hair

Well, not really. I like the man I have and I think I’ll keep him around. But I am having hair issues. The problem? Pantene has discontinued my favorite shampoo – Pantene Clarifying. And they didn’t just discontinue it – the revamped their whole shampoo line – made it all slick and yuppified. They don’t just have three kinds of ordinary shampoo any more. Noooo, that wouldn’t be right. Now they have a number of “shampoo collections.” There’s shampoo to preserve color or shine, and within that category, different shampoos for each hair color. Then there’s the fine hair collection, medium hair collection (what exactly is “medium” hair anyway?), curly hair collection, medium to thick collection, and so on, but no standard, old-fashioned clarifying shampoo.

What’s a girl to do? There are other brands of clarifying shampoo, but the ones I’ve tried leave my hair gummy or dry. So, I’ve taken the leap and am breaking up with Pantene. It’s been a long and happy relationship, but it’s over now. Sorry Pantene, guess you’ve never heard of New Coke.

So readers, tell me what kind of hair you have, what shampoo you like, and why. I’m ready for a new shampoo relationship!

  1. Hair: fine and limp
Solution: keep getting perms so I don’t have to deal with it more than a “scrunch” every morning (my hair and I broke up years ago)
Shampoo: one my stylist sells, for hair that is damaged or chemically treated. Unfortunately, it has no mfg. listed, but under ingredients it says “Formula 74-22cf.”

  2. Hey, i have used my fair share of different brands of shampoo, mainly because they stop working on my hair eventually! I currently use Aussie, which is really good for my hair, which is long and thick, but i suffer a bit from dry scalp and greasy hair, and i also colour my hair a lot but this shampoo works really well, keeping it fresh and clean but also maintaining my colour…. deffo recommend it! I use the shampoo specifically for coloured hair, so not tried the normal ones, but it works fairly well, so the rest should be fine!
To be fair, i think most brands have about a million different shampoos for each hair type/colour/what have you!

    • I think you’re right in that Pantene is not unique in offereing a number of different choices of shampoo. It just irritated me that with all those choices, why couldn’t they include mine? Thanks for stopping by – I may put Aussie on my list of ones to try.

  3. That’s crappy when they stop making the one you want. I remember when my favourite nail polish color was discontinued. (I know you’d think there are others that are close, but there weren’t!)

I use Joico shampoo and conditioner. They have a limited selection – about 4 different kinds – don’t know if they have one you’ll like. Good luck in your search!

      • Oh good. I get tips on hair and make-up from a friend of mine who I have decided is more on top of these things than I. She recently told me to use green eyeliner instead of the brown I’ve been using for 20 years. Changed my life. (joking, but it does look nice)

Don't leave yet. Tell me what's on your mind.
